Did you know that it is recommended for both partners to have a detox prior to intended family planning and conception, in order to enhance your chances of fertility? A good amount of time to prepare for this would be approximately 6 months prior to intended conception.

What is involved in a Detox? Is it like fasting?

Detoxes are a chance for your body to regain itself back to an optimal health state of balance. If you have been on medications (including the oral contraceptive pill), exposed to toxins in a work or travel environment, drink alcohol, smoke, or simply wish to feel generally more healthy before trying to conceive, then a detox may be a good idea for you.

It doesn’t have to be as severe or extreme as fasting, which tend to be more intense days of specifically avoiding food and substance intake. Detoxes are also not “diets” however gentle detoxes can appear very similar to certain diet trends because we are limiting a lot of unhealthy food and drinks in the meal plans.

Most Common Things to Avoid During a Detox

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Medications
  • Deep fried foods
  • Refined sugar
  • Carbonated drinks (soft drinks, energy drinks)

Do I have to avoid Caffeine?

This is an optional component of detoxing for fertility, and depending on your fertility goals, it may or may not be a negotiable factor in your meal planning.

If you have been advised that one or both partners have medical conditions affecting your fertility, it is recommended to establish a sustainable, healthy eating and lifestyle plan, to support any other interventions (eg. IVF) towards your successful conception.
